WVU Researcher Recognized for Work in Land Reclamation

Registration is open for the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Water Resources Conference, co-hosted by the WVWRI. The event takes place Oct.12-13 at the NCTC in Shepherdstown, W.Va.
WVU researchers, led by WVWRI, are investigating the potential of extracting rare earth elements from acid mine drainage sludge. The U.S. currently imports 95 percent of its REEs from China.
In 1988, Congress recognized the need for an organization to address outstanding reclamation problems and authorized formation of the National Mine Land Reclamation Center.
The 3RQ project monitors the Allegheny, Monongahela and Upper Ohio rivers, tributaries and headwater streams that drain an area of over 25,000 square miles in five states.
The Brownfields Assistance Centers were created in 2005 by the West Virginia Legislature to empower communities to plan and implement brownfields redevelopment projects.
